SKATER INTERVIEW

An Interview with… Jen Magic!

What about derby caught your attention? When did you first start playing?

I loved skating as a kid, and when I saw the recruitment night flyer for VCDD I decided to give it a shot.

What was that “one moment” when you knew playing derby was the right thing for you?

I don't think I had one moment that was it for me. It's been a journey and the moments that count for me are the ones when I'm reminded that this team has become my community.

I love to watch my teammates skills grow and see them accomplish new things.

What’s something you’ve learned playing derby that has translated into another part of your life?

Derby has exposed me to so many different people of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and gender identities that I may not have every met in my 'normal' life. I'm so lucky to count all these teammates as friends!

Did you play any sports before derby?

Not really, I've mostly been a sports spectator.

Do you have a favorite & a least favorite position? Can you elaborate?

Normally I'm a blocker. It's so exciting to catch the jammer and work with the other blockers to contain them. I also enjoy the strategy of playing offense and defense at the same time. Jamming is not my thing, but on the rare occasion I do jam it feels amazing to make it out of the pack.

What do you do to get ready for a bout?

I like to have a good breakfast and then just relax for a little while. I don't really have a set routine.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about playing derby?

Do it! Join our freshmeat program. If you find that skating or the conact portion is not for you, we also have skating and non-skating officials within our league.

Finish this sentence: When I’m not playing derby, I am _____.

Hanging out with my best guy Jeff and our dogs Einstein and Patronus

Do you have a derby mentor?

Not really, there are so many teammates that I have looked up to over the years.

What keeps you motivated to keep playing when things get tough?

Derby is my safe space from all the craziness in life. When I get out there for 2 hours all my worries are put on the backburner. Sometimes I need to remind myself that I need that space.

What’s your favorite part of skating with VCDD?

Right now I am coaching fresh meat and spending less time playing. I love watching new skaters when skills click for them.

Any last bit of advice you'd like to give people??

Come out to a bout! Come to recruitment night! There is a place in derby for everyone from skaters and officials to spectators.
