An Interview with…Isabel!

What about derby caught your attention? When did you first start playing?

I started playing early 2026 and enjoyed the inclusive and supportive attitude within the team. Everyone is very nice.

What was that “one moment” when you knew playing derby was the right thing for you?

When my skates off of Facebook Marketplace fit perfectly.

What’s something you’ve learned playing derby that has translated into another part of your life?

Keep your chest up, eyes forward, and just keep pushing.

Do you have a favorite & a least favorite position? Can you elaborate?

I haven’t found my favorite or least favorite position yet. Right now, I am still focused on keeping my body where it needs to be and not on the ground.

What do you do to get ready for a bout?

I haven’t played in a bout, but am excited to.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about playing derby?

Try it. Everybody is very nice and it’s a very fun fast paced game.

Finish this sentence: When I’m not playing derby, I am _____.

Sleeping. I am a very tired person.

Do you have a derby mentor?

I really appreciate everyone on the team for supporting my learning as a freshie. I can think of at least one moment where each teammate has taken time to adapt and include me in our day to day practice. Jen, Lobster, Doom and Yur Mama are definitely standouts who have always been available to help me. Shiel Shock has always been fun to play with and endlessly encouraging. And lastly, a huge thank you to everyone who has acted as a freshie coach.

What keeps you motivated to keep playing when things get tough?

The harder something is now, the more fulfilling it will be when you master it.

What’s your favorite part of skating with VCDD?

The people and teamwork.

Any last bit of advice you'd like to give people??

Don’t be afraid to fall.
