SKATER INTERVIEW
An interview with Szul
What about derby caught your attention? When did you first start playing?
The strength and confidence of the women. I first started playing when I joined fresh meat program with the LA Derby Dolls in 2011.
What was that “one moment” when you knew playing derby was the right thing for you?
It was a compilation of moments for me, no matter what city I was in the women welcomed me with open arms.
What’s something you’ve learned playing derby that has translated into another part of your life?
I’ve learned in derby that your gonna fall and make mistakes, you just have to get up and keep going. Just like in life, there will always be setbacks but as long as you don’t give up the sun will rise again.
Do you have a favorite & a least favorite position? Can you elaborate?
I like playing all positions and being wherever my team needs me!
What do you do to get ready for a bout?
Hydrate and try to stay calm, bout days are so exciting!
What advice would you give to someone thinking about playing derby?
Hydrate and try to stay calm, bout days are so exciting!
Finish this sentence: When I’m not playing derby, I am _____.
I am raising two beautiful daughters, volunteering my time helping others, enjoying nature, and learning new things!
Do you have a derby mentor?
I have moved around so much during my derby career I have not been able to form any solid bonds. I do really admire Nikki Badazz from AZDD.
What keeps you motivated to keep playing when things get tough?
Being on skates brings me joy no matter what’s going on in life.
What’s your favorite part of skating with VCDD?
They like to have fun, I’m fairly new to VCDD and look forward to getting to know everyone more!
Any last bit of advice you'd like to give people??
Never give up, it doesn’t matter how many times you fall, it’s how many times you get back up.
