SKATER INTERVIEW

An Interview with…Galgo

What about derby caught your attention? When did you first start playing?

I grew up playing sports and being a rowdy kid who never could get all her energy out. It seemed like Derby was a place where all the weird social outcasted girls got to go when they grew up. I really liked that I could play sports again without the fear of someone's dad who is also the team coach taking it too seriously and yelling at me. That was the one part about sports as a child that I never liked. It was nice to be surrounded by women (and non binary people!) and feel like I was in a safe environment.

What was that “one moment” when you knew playing derby was the right thing for you?

I guess I can't think of one moment but my biggest hesitation when I started was all about fear and insecurity. I realized you can still have fun doing things that scare you! That was such a great thing to learn.

How did you pick your derby name?

A Galgo is a breed of dog, very similar to a Greyhound. I love dogs very much they are my heroes. Greyhounds are my favorite dogs, I like to go fast just like them :) plus its a double pun... Gal-Go!

How did you pick your derby number?

Its my lucky number. I was born on the 23rd and I just think its a very pretty looking number too. Classic self obsessed Galgo behavior!

What’s something you’ve learned playing derby that has translated into another part of your life?

Showing up and working hard is one of life's greatest rewards. Don't be afraid to fail, be afraid to not try.

Do you have a favorite & a least favorite position? Can you elaborate?

Anyone who knows me knows I'm always jonesing to jam. Something about it is so freeing and physical and challenging and....crazy! I just love it. It makes me want to jump for joy, even when its hard. Blocking has always been challenging for me because I'm so light on my feet. Its hard for me to switch back into blocker mode especially during bouts because I'm so used to being a solo agent on the track in those high stakes situations.

What do you do to get ready for a bout?

Dream about Tuffy's raspberry bars that she makes for every home game and then eat 17 of said raspberry bars and let the sugar rush carry me through.

but actually, eat a good breakfast/lunch with a lot of protein, try to drink water even though I'm bad at it, and have fun and skip around to get the jitters out.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about playing derby?

its not any more dangerous than any other contact sport!

Finish this sentence: When I’m not playing derby, I am _____.

wishing I was playing derby

Do you have a derby mentor?

I love all my Vendolls they have all shaped me to be the skater I am today

What keeps you motivated to keep playing when things get tough?

I can do hard things, and I don't need to do them well to be proud of myself. Simply doing them is all I need to prove to myself that I am worthy!

What’s your favorite part of skating with VCDD?

Everyone is so nice and encouraging. It's important for me personally to be in an environment where good sportsmanship and camaraderie is placed above the importance of winning. Winning is nice too but we're all here for fun right guys!

Any last bit of advice you'd like to give people??

Drink more water???? (this is advice for me from me)
