SKATER INTERVIEW

An Interview with…Mighty Mouse!

What about derby caught your attention? When did you first start playing?

I was looking for a way to meet other people around my age in a pretty rural area. Derby became a great way for me to get active while also spending time with an inclusive and welcoming community!

What was that “one moment” when you knew playing derby was the right thing for you?

I joined my first team when they began rebuilding after Covid. We lost every game we played for at least a year and were still happy to keep playing! Even after we started winning games, our team's focus was really ensuring that we were having fun playing together, and that felt really special!

What’s something you’ve learned playing derby that has translated into another part of your life?

Perseverance! Derby has taught me to stay committed, take risks, and leave time for things I enjoy.

Do you have a favorite & a least favorite position? Can you elaborate?

Favorite- Jammer! I'm still learning, but it's a fun position to play!

Least favorite- Pivot

What do you do to get ready for a bout?

A good night's sleep and a good pre-game playlist

What advice would you give to someone thinking about playing derby?

Just try it! Once you join the community, you'll keep coming back for more.

Finish this sentence: When I’m not playing derby, I am _____.

Sleeping

Do you have a derby mentor?

No, but I aspire to be half as good as the vets on our team!

What keeps you motivated to keep playing when things get tough?

Players are tough on the track, but so nice and encouraging both on and off the track!

What’s your favorite part of skating with VCDD?

Seeing the team bond both on and off the track. Coaches make intentional effort to include everyone and keep the team motivated, which I appreciate!

Any last bit of advice you'd like to give people??

Come to a game!
