An Interview with…JEN MAGIC

What about derby caught your attention? When did you first start playing?

Back in 2005 there were some people in my hometown talking about starting a roller derby team. I thought it sounded like so much fun, but I didn't happen. Fast forward to 2015 I saw a flyer for VCDD and became immediately obsessed and decided to join fresh meat.

What was that “one moment” when you knew playing derby was the right thing for you?

For me there is not just one moment. I have them all the time.

What’s something you’ve learned playing derby that has translated into another part of your life?

So many things come easy to me. When I joined i thought I would slide right in there and be a great skater and player quickly. Man, was I wrong. Like my friend Fizz always says 'practice makes progress'. I've learned to he patient with myself and others.

Do you have a favorite & a least favorite position? Can you elaborate?

I primarily play as a blocker or pivot. My least favorite is jammer, but there is nothing like that feeling of getting lead jammer.

What do you do to get ready for a bout?

Have some coffee, walk the dogs, and have breakfast.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about playing derby?

Do it!

When I'm not playing derby, I'm hanging out with my guy and our fur kids.

Do you have a derby mentor?

Not so much, but I'm inspired by all of my teammates. There is so much talent and drive on this team that I find my self being inspired to try new things because of my teammates

What keeps you motivated to keep playing when things get tough?

Knowing that generally when I hit the track all my other problems are on hold.

What’s your favorite part of skating with VCDD?

My teammates! I can't express the love I have for this league.

Any last bit of advice you'd like to give people??

Never give up on yourself!
